The Common Banana Dilemma
Despite their nutritional benefits, the common problem with bananas is their tendency to rot quickly. After a few days, the once-yellow fruit turns black, leaving us frustrated with our attempts to prevent it. However, there’s a unique tip that, although requiring careful steps, can extend the life of bananas to an impressive two years.
Storing Bananas: The Secret Method
- Preparation: Start by buying the desired quantity of bananas. Clean the skin using a toothbrush and a bit of baking soda. Rinse them under running water and dry with absorbent paper.
- Cutting and Jarring: Remove both ends of the bananas without peeling. Cut them into pieces around two fingers thick. Take glass jars of approximately 700 ml and layer the following ingredients: a bay leaf, two cloves of garlic or two cloves, two slices of cut chili pepper, a teaspoon each of coriander seeds, dill seeds, and a pepper mixture (white pepper, black pepper, green pepper, pink pepper, and allspice).
- Banana Placement: Insert banana pieces (around a dozen in a jar of this size) and add more chili slices. Include a teaspoon of sugar, one and a half teaspoons of salt, a teaspoon of 70% vinegar, and a bit of hot water.
Completing the Preservation Process
- Equipment: Prepare a saucepan with hot water and insert a cloth to prevent jar breakage.
- Sterilization: Place the jars with lids into the pot and heat everything for about ten minutes.
- Final Steps: After sterilization, dry the jars, seal them tightly to prevent air entry, and store them in a cool place. Your bananas are now set to stay fresh for two whole years.
